Mingus by Joni Mitchell had a huge impact on me as a singer and young defecting jazzbo in my teens. It was free, volatile, complex and so, so beautiful. The record was the final collaboration for Charles Mingus just before he passed in 1979, with Jaco Pastorius and Joni floating in mellifluous beauty.
I am performing a piece from this album tomorrow night in New York city to mark Joni’s 75th Birthday, amongst an amazing line-up of artists. 8:30PM at Public Arts on Christie St.
very honoured to be performing the first live interpretations of Ursula K Leguin’s 1985 album ‘Music and Poetry of the Kesh’ - created by Ursula with buchla master Todd Barton as a soundtrack to her novel ‘Always Coming Home” published the same year. Sincere thanks to Rvng Intl. and @mattwerth for having me musical direct and perform with a beautiful ensemble of unique musicians to interpret Ursula’s world: Okwui Okpokwasili, Judith Berkson, Corey Fogel, Sara Serpa and Todd Barton himself! We perform October 2 at National Sawdust New York as a part of @rvngintl’s FRKWYS Vol 14, on a double bill with NUE featuring Yoshi Wada and Tashi Wada and Julia Holter. X comen
